How Can You Afford The Increase in the Federal Cigarette Tax?
On February 4, 2009, Congress enacted, and President Obama signed into law, a 62-cent a pack($6.20 per carton) increase in the federal cigarete tax, along with increases in other tobacco taxes, to fund expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The federal cigarette tax increase to $1.01 per pack($10.10 per carton) on March 31, 2009. That is a 179% increase in the federal cigarette tax.
Since January 1, 2002, 44 states and the District of Columbia have increased state cigarette taxes, some more than once. The average state cigarette tax has increased from 43.4 cents($4.34 per carton) to $1.21 a pack($12.10 per carton). That is a 159% increase in state cigarette taxes.
We pay federal cigarette tax and state cigarette tax and pay state sales tax on the federal and state cigarette tax. Is it excessive? If so what can we do? Cigarette price increases are costing us smokers an arm and a leg.

In Texas where I live the tax is $14.10 per carton since the $10 per carton increase Jan. 1, 2007. Now that the federal cigarette tax is $10.10 per carton, we pay $50 and up for a carton of name brand cigarettes. Generic cigarettes are $40 a carton.
